7/15/2009 SANCA recently awarded two grants for youth programs!
The Lucky Seven Foundation awarded a $4,000 grant for the SANCA Outreach Program. This program sends teams of instructors to schools to teach circus-based physical skills and teamwork activities to low-income and special education students that cannot to come to our main location. In 2008 we served 90 youth with circus classes, and we’re set to expand to serve up to 230 kids with 16 one-hour weekly sessions per semester in the 2009-10 school year. We teach tumbling, juggling, human pyramids and other acrobatic skills, and work with the teens to help them gain confidence in their abilities, and to learn to work with and trust each other.
The City of Seattle Mayor's Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs Youth Arts Program awarded a $3,550 grant for the SANCA Youth Performance Company. This program enables students to showcase their performance skills. Company members are recruited from our classes, outreach programs, and summer camps. They range in age from 8 to 18, and are skilled in a variety of circus disciplines.
They create and perform original acts at major events and festivals and hold an end-of-year show. This project introduces youth to performing and gives youth, especially those with limited access to the arts, more than just a one-time arts experience; it provides them with a track to develop performance arts experience over several years.
A big thank you with much appreciation to our new funders!
